Repeat it. Insight is not the mechanism.
Use it when
- You know exactly which reaction you would change and it happens before you can catch it
- You have tried to want it differently and wanting has not moved it
- You have three weeks and you would rather spend them on one thing than five
- The tool works when you remember it and you never remember it in time
The steps
- Define precisely — not "be less anxious" but "use the Now Protocol when I feel my chest tighten before a difficult conversation."
- Identify the exact cue — the specific sensory or situational signal that initiates the new response.
- Practise with full attention at the earliest cue — before the old pattern builds momentum.
- Close the Loop every time — the reward signal that marks the pathway as worth reinforcing.
- Practise daily. Assess at three weeks. If still effortful, continue toward six weeks and beyond.
- Sleep consistently — this is when structural neural change consolidates.
What to expect
It may still feel effortful at three weeks, which is the ordinary timeline rather than a failure. Assess it then: still deliberate is a reason to keep going, not a reason to stop.
If this isn't the one

- You cannot start the daily practice → The Task Activation Protocol
- Three weeks in and nothing is easier → The Baseline Reset

Prefer it one step at a time? The same protocol as a guided runner in the app, which also keeps a private record if you want one.
This is one of the tools a seventeen-session series teaches, ninety minutes at a time, in a room of six to twelve people. It is peer-facilitated, free to host, and every handout and worksheet it uses is free to take.
Where this one comes from
You have just run one protocol. Behind it is one idea: everything you do is paid for out of a single account, and almost nothing is charged at the moment you do it — which is why the fifth repetition is worse than five times the first, and why a bad night does not present its bill until the following afternoon. Shoulder the Bill is that argument as one continuous read, written out of a workplace injury and the four years afterwards. The manual is the one you open at a page. The Workbook is the one you write in.
three books, one system →Check what stayed 3 questions
Answer in your own words, out loud or on paper. Nothing is scored, nothing is marked, and nothing is stored — this is for noticing what you have, not for anybody to grade.
How much are you changing at once, and over what period?
What the material says
Changing one specific automatic response, over weeks.
One step is not about practice at all. What is it, and what happens during it?
What the material says
this is when structural neural change consolidates.
How often do you close the loop while rewiring, and what does the signal mark?
What the material says
the reward signal that marks the pathway as worth reinforcing.
