Equipped With Agency

Shutdown Protocol

Take the pressure off, get warm, then stand up.

One small movement is where it starts.

Straight to the steps

Use it when

Where it stops Self-regulation has a ceiling. The protocols below are matched to the state, and they still assume enough of you is available to run one. Past the ceiling, no protocol in this book substitutes for another person, and the correct move is not a better tool. It is a phone call.

The steps

  1. Reduce all demands. Remove pressure to perform or explain.
  2. Physical warmth — blanket, warm drink, sunlight. The body needs safety signals.
  3. One tiny movement — stand up and walk to the next room. Just that.
  4. One simple sensory anchor — hold something textured, smell something familiar.
  5. One micro-choice — "water or tea?" The choice begins to restore agency.
  6. No pressure for insight until back in window. Presence first.

What to expect

You may not manage more than the one movement, and that is the whole ask. Warmth and a single small choice come first; being asked for nothing is what starts it moving.

If this isn't the one

Where it comes from

Prefer it one step at a time? The same protocol as a guided runner in the app, which also keeps a private record if you want one.

This is one of the tools a seventeen-session series teaches, ninety minutes at a time, in a room of six to twelve people. It is peer-facilitated, free to host, and every handout and worksheet it uses is free to take.

Where this one comes from

You have just run one protocol. Behind it is one idea: everything you do is paid for out of a single account, and almost nothing is charged at the moment you do it — which is why the fifth repetition is worse than five times the first, and why a bad night does not present its bill until the following afternoon. Shoulder the Bill is that argument as one continuous read, written out of a workplace injury and the four years afterwards. The manual is the one you open at a page. The Workbook is the one you write in.
