For facilitators

The delivery standard, and how somebody other than the author would run this.

The delivery standard

15 core elements, each written so a third person at the back of the room can mark it, plus an explicitly generous list of what a facilitator may change without asking anyone.

How many people have been trained

0. One person delivers this series and he wrote it. The pathway is written and published; nobody has walked it yet. That means this has a delivery standard, which is a weaker thing than the fidelity claim an established programme can make, and any host should be told which of the two they are being offered.

What sign-off would be

One facilitator's written statement that they watched another deliver this series faithfully, on named dates, against a checklist both hold a copy of. It is not a certification, not a licence, and not a credential. The words certified and accredited are not used about anybody here.

Check yourself before you run one 39 questions

Answer in your own words, out loud or on paper. Nothing is scored, nothing is marked, and nothing is stored — this is for noticing what you have, not for anybody to grade.

  1. Week six. The same eight people who were there in week one, and you are eleven minutes behind before you have started. What happens at the opening?

    What the material says

All four crisis lines said out loud at the opening

    The repetition is the mechanism.

  2. A participant asks, in front of the room, whether you think they should come off their medication. What do you say about who you are, and what do you not say?

    What the material says

The facilitator says they are a peer facilitator and not a clinician, and that this is not therapy.

In B.C. counsellor and therapist carry legal weight

  3. It is session one and you have twelve minutes for the group agreements. Which of the seven can be summarised, and which has to be said out loud?

    What the material says

In session one, all seven read or posted. spoken, not skimmed

It is the only limit on confidentiality and a participant is entitled to know it before deciding what to share.

  4. Going round the room, one person says nothing. You have forty minutes left and they have not spoken in three weeks. What do you do?

    What the material says

Somebody passes, or does not speak, and nothing follows

    Agreement 2 is a promise.

  5. The protocol block has overrun by fifteen minutes and the pair work is next. What happens to the pair block?

    What the material says

is not cut for time or replaced with discussion

This is Layer C, and it is the thing that separates this series from a coping-tips group.

  6. You are at eighty-five minutes of ninety and the discussion is the best it has been all series. What happens in the last ten minutes?

    What the material says

The last ten minutes happen: Operational Rule, Self-Reward Loop, routing, take-home.

    The close is not administrative.

  7. Which four sessions carry an extra requirement before anybody leaves the room, and what is it?

    What the material says

On S04, S08, S15 and S17 the Now Protocol run with the whole room, then the Self-Reward Loop, before anybody leaves

Ending on the material is how somebody drives home dysregulated.

  8. Session sixteen is Daily Maintenance Habits. Nothing in it is heavy. Where are the crisis lines on that week's handout?

    What the material says

Same position on the page each week.

A person in trouble will not go looking through a folder

  9. You are opening a session in a venue you have not used before. What does the land acknowledgement have to contain, and what is not enough?

    What the material says

The specific nation whose territory the venue sits on, said aloud, pronounced as practised the traditional territories of many nations

A recital that names nobody is the form without the substance.

  10. The Circle figure is about to go up on the screen for the first time in this series. When does the note about it get said?

    What the material says

Said before or as the Circle goes up

A circle diagram in a wellness session in B.C. is read as a medicine wheel whether or not it was meant that way.

  11. You are going to facilitate S15, which goes directly at suicidal thinking. What has to be true about your own preparation before you start?

    What the material says

has decided how they will hold that room

Preparation is what makes that room safe, and preparation is a thing a peer facilitator can do.

  12. The room has gone quiet and you can feel that your own story would land. How much of it goes in, and which three sessions take none of it?

    What the material says

One sentence, not one story. None at all during S04, S08 or S15.

This is the single easiest place for the series to become about the facilitator, and the facilitator is the last person who will notice.

  13. You have had the worst week of the year and the session is in two hours. What do you run on yourself, and what is the outcome that is allowed?

    What the material says

Baseline check run on themselves before the doors opened. A session was cancelled rather than delivered dysregulated, if it came to that.

The facilitator's regulation is the intervention; everything else is content.

  14. The outcome measure comes back and one score is very low. You could work out whose it is from the pairing code. What happens next?

    What the material says

no individual is ever scored or followed up on a low answer

Assessment is in the out-of-bounds column.

  15. Something happened in the room tonight that you are still carrying at ten o'clock. What should already have been arranged, and by when should it be used?

    What the material says

A named partner exists, was asked, knows they are it was used the same day anything happened

the day it is needed is not the day to arrange it

  16. A community centre can fund four ninety-minute evenings, not seventeen weeks. You offer the four-week short course.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    adaptable

Seventeen is the catalogue, not the offer.

  17. The room is mostly parents, so you sequence a six-session run to put The Team early and The Circle late. S01 still opens it.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    adaptable

S01 first, because it sets the container and the group agreements.

  18. You replace the chapter's worked example with one from your own last year at work, kept inside the disclosure limits.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    adaptable

    Bring your own.

  19. Nine people in the room and one has said they would rather not pair with anybody. You run the practice block as trios.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    adaptable

An odd number, a room where pairing is not safe, or a group that has not settled yet.

  20. The protocol block overruns, so you compress Layer B by six minutes and leave the closing ten untouched.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    adaptable

Every block except the closing ten is yours to lengthen or compress.

  21. You move the series online, and collect an emergency contact and location at intake, telling people why you are collecting it.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    adaptable

Virtual changes the crisis procedure materially

  22. You run the identical protocols in a trades room and in a seniors' room, changing the vocabulary you wrap around them.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    adaptable

The tools do not change; the words around them should.

  23. You add the local crisis line and the community walk-in clinic to the handout, alongside the four national numbers rather than instead of them.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    adaptable

Adding the crisis line, walk-in clinic or peer service that actually exists in that community is an improvement, not a deviation

  24. A tool assumes a household that will help. You say out loud that it may not fit, and ask the room where you fit, if at all.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    adaptable

Say so, rather than letting somebody sit with a tool built on assumptions their life does not share.

  25. The room asks for S15 and you add it to next week, planning to work out how to hold the room on the night.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

Unprepared is the risk; uncertified is not.

  26. Week nine, running late, the same eight faces since week one. You skip the crisis numbers at the opening because they have heard them.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

    Especially then.

  27. You drop the pair block for the whole run and give the time to group discussion, which the room prefers.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

Without Layer C this is a coping-skills class.

  28. A participant describes what has been happening in their body and asks what you think is going on. You offer your read of it.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

Diagnosis, treatment planning, medication, tapering, exercise prescription, or any interpretation of somebody's symptoms.

  29. In a follow-up email you describe the series as counselling, because that is the word the reader will recognise.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

Both titles are protected in B.C.

  30. You tell the room that the workbook page has to be done before next session, to keep everybody moving together.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

Voluntariness is not a feature of this series, it is a condition of it.

  31. One WHO-5 item reads oddly to a trades room, so you reword that item and leave the other four alone.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

Changing one item to make it fit better produces a scale validated as nothing.

  32. A returned measure is very low. You use the pairing code to work out whose it is and check in with them privately.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

That is assessment, and assessment is out of bounds.

  33. The chairs are in a circle, so the invitation describes the evening as a talking circle.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

A talking circle is a practice with protocols that belong to the nations that hold them.

  34. You deliver the series under your own organisation's name and branding, with the standardised language intact.

    adaptable · breaks it

    What the material says

    breaks it

Facilitate it freely; do not rebrand it.

  35. Stage 0 is reading. What has to be true before it is finished?

    What the material says

They can state the scope table from memory, and say what is out of bounds without looking it up.

  36. Stage 1 is a full series as a participant, not as an observer at the back. What has to be true before it is finished?

    What the material says

They have been on the receiving end of every block they will later run, including the pair work and the close.

  37. Stage 2 is co-facilitation. What has to be true before it is finished?

    What the material says

They have run a full session with somebody in the room, and neither of them had to intervene in the other.

  38. Stage 3 is two observed solo sessions, one of them an activation-risk session. What has to be true before it is finished?

    What the material says

Both checklists are complete, and every core element is either met or has a written note saying what happened and what changes next time.

  39. Stage 4 is sign-off and a first solo series. What has to be true at the end of it, and why is that not a joke?

    What the material says

The first series is finished and the person is still willing to run another one.
