The Now Protocol

Get your feet under you when everything is too loud.

I only need the next step.

Straight to the steps

Use it when

Where it stops For a small number of people, grounding exercises—naming what is around you, feeling your feet, listening for what is in the room—briefly increase distress or a sense of unreality rather than easing it. If that happens, stop. Switch to gentle movement, or to the presence of a trusted person, and consider speaking with a professional about what works for you.

The steps

  1. Stop.
  2. See 3 things. Feel 2 sensations. Hear 1 sound.
  3. Exhale slowly, three times.
  4. Take one step.
  5. Close the Loop.

What to expect

You may still feel the pull of it. The room comes back into focus. You end up holding one step you can take, rather than the whole of it at once.

If this isn't the one

Where it comes from

Prefer it one step at a time? The same protocol as a guided runner in the app, which also keeps a private record if you want one.

This is one of the tools a seventeen-session series teaches, ninety minutes at a time, in a room of six to twelve people. It is peer-facilitated, free to host, and every handout and worksheet it uses is free to take.

Where this one comes from

You have just run one protocol. Behind it is one idea: everything you do is paid for out of a single account, and almost nothing is charged at the moment you do it — which is why the fifth repetition is worse than five times the first, and why a bad night does not present its bill until the following afternoon. Shoulder the Bill is that argument as one continuous read, written out of a workplace injury and the four years afterwards. The manual is the one you open at a page. The Workbook is the one you write in.

    Exhale slowly, three times.

  3. What is the anchor phrase, and how much of the problem does it ask you to take on?

I only need the next step.
